A crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a prepared tooth or molar. Once placed, the tooth regains its original shape, strength, and functionality.

A crown is recommended when a tooth is too damaged or weak to be restored with a filling. Crowns can also improve the appearance of your smile, for example if a tooth is discolored or misshapen.

What is a bridge?

Bridges are often mentioned together with crowns because they serve a similar purpose: restoring your bite. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth between two crowns. These crowns are placed on the teeth next to the gap.

If the adjacent teeth are still healthy, an adhesive bridge (also called a resin-bonded bridge) can sometimes be placed, requiring minimal preparation. The bridge is then bonded to the back of your natural teeth with small metal wings.
