1 in 5 people suffer from mouth sores, but what exactly are they? How do they form? And most importantly, what can you do about them?

What are mouth sores?

Mouth sores (also called mouth ulcers) are small greyish-white spots with a red border inside the mouth. They often appear:

on the inside of the cheeks
on the inside of the lips
under the tongue
on the gums
on the palate

Mouth sores can be very painful, especially while eating or drinking.

What causes mouth sores?

The exact cause of mouth sores is still unknown, but we do know they are more common when linked to factors such as:

stress
hormonal changes
hereditary predisposition
deficiency of iron, vitamin B12, vitamin C, or folic acid
side effects of certain medication (e.g., fentanyl)
low immune system
accidentally biting the cheek
dry mouth
poorly fitting dentures
small injuries inside the mouth

It’s important to know that mouth sores are not contagious and are generally not dangerous.

What to do against mouth sores?

Mouth sores usually disappear on their own within about 14 days. To relieve symptoms, you can:

avoid spicy foods
ensure sufficient vitamins in your diet
avoid acidic drinks (like soda or orange juice)
avoid foods with sharp edges (like baguettes or crusty rolls)
don’t touch the sore with your tongue, fingers, or toothbrush
use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritation
• apply an ice cube directly to the sore for relief

How to treat mouth sores?

Although they heal on their own, mouth sores can sometimes be very painful, making it hard to eat or drink. Some remedies often recommended include:
