When tartar builds up underneath the gums, pockets can form. At first these pockets are shallow, but if left untreated, they can become deep and cause serious problems such as bone loss. Standard cleaning by the dental hygienist is then no longer sufficient. In this case, we perform a flap surgery. During this treatment, the gums are temporarily lifted so that the area underneath can be cleaned thoroughly.
The treatment itself is painless because you will first receive local anesthesia. Once the area is numb, the dentist or periodontist carefully opens the gum and gently lifts it (the flap). The area beneath the gums is then cleaned thoroughly, removing tartar and bacteria. Afterward, the gum is stitched back in place, allowing it to heal and the pockets to shrink.
Prevention is always better than cure. To avoid the need for flap surgery, good oral hygiene is essential. We also recommend visiting the dental hygienist at least once a year for professional cleaning. Removing tartar in time helps prevent the problem from becoming severe.
